Chiropractic has a different role in the health care system than the medical model that many people are accustomed to. The medical approach emphasizes the repairing of the body through external means. Although doctors of chiropractic go through curriculum as rigorous as that required for general medical practitioners, chiropractors do not use the outside-in approach of fixing a body with drugs or surgery.
Chiropractic is based on the scientific fact that impulses from the spinal cord and brain directly control and regulate all bodily functions and determine our ability to maintain health. These impulses flow from the brain, down the spinal cord, through the nerves to every organ and tissue in the body and then respond back to the brain to confirm that the body is functioning properly. When mechanical problems arise within the spine from injury, wear and tear, etc., a variety of symptoms and pain syndromes can arise.
A chiropractor looks to the spine and possible neurological involvement to determine the cause of symptoms. A chiropractor corrects the mechanical problems in the spine and thereby removes the interference within the nervous system by performing an “adjustment” (realignment of the spine). Nerve function is then restored and the body regains its ability to self-regulate and self-heal, all without drugs or surgery. Areas of misalignment that affect nerve function are referred to as “subluxations.” Only a chiropractor takes care of subluxations and so only a chiropractor is able to tell you whether or not chiropractic can help you.
